The Idiot’s Guide To Providing A Better Blog Reading Experience

Blog ReadingWhen you put together two bloggers who churn out equally good contents, chances are you will be attracted to one more than the other especially when the said blogger has taken pains to deliver a livelier blog reading experience. By the end of this article, you would be able to grasp what brings a better blog reading experience and you should aim to deliver that kind of experience to your readers.

Let us take the analogy of two salesmen making a powerpoint presentation of the same product. One salesman uses vivid images and friendly fonts to bring the message across. Another merely stuffs his powerpoint presentation with text, and sometimes with a poor choice of colours. The former will draw your attention and get you all excited but the latter would probably make you bored and shut all your attention to it. Get the picture of what I am trying to say? It is all about presentation.

Font

Not everyone reads with a magnifying glass and not everyone has difficult reading. Unless absolutely necessary, stay with the safe standard 12 point font. You wouldn’t want your readers to have to strain to read what you have written. Arial and Times New Roman are the standard fonts which are acceptable to most readers. Read on »

Things Which Dent A Blog’s Credibility

CredibilityAs a blogger, is it your principle to blog with credibility? Do you strive to earn trust and respect from your readers and thus sustain and increase the readership of your blog? I have previously written about credibility and trust in blogging and why they are important to a blogger. It builds reputation and in the long run, allows your blog to grow in tandem.

How do we detect a blog or blogger who’s credibility is questionable? Well, there are tell tale signs which you can see from a blog. These are some of the things which dent a blogger’s credibility.

Background

If your blog is the teaching type - be it making money or cooking or kite flying, a lack of background about yourself can result in your reader taking your teaching with suspicion. What qualification do you have to teach? I don’t mean that all such bloggers are required to be academically qualified but a word or two about your familiarity with the subject matter would be important. If you are teaching others to make money, what evidence can you show to prove that you’ve made enough money to convince others that they could do the same? If you are teaching people how to be successful in social media, are you able to prove that you have had considerable success in social media? Read on »

Make Yourself Accessible

AccessibilityAre your readers able to contact you? Recently, I was privy to some information on cpm advertising and wanted to inform some bloggers in my network about it so that they can join the same programme as I to make some money through blog advertising. Alas, to my frustration, there was no way for me to contact them apart from leaving a comment in their blog postings which I was reluctant to do (as it would make me sound spammy to others). A random surfing of many blogs show that quite a lot of bloggers do not provide any means for readers to reach them apart from leaving comments.

Why should you make yourself accessible to your readers? Isn’t having comments enough? Let me list out here the benefits of making yourself accessible and contactable by your readers.

Privacy

From my own example above, being contactable gives your readers accessibility to you privately. Some readers would prefer not to leave a comment when the matter which they want to communicate with you is irrelevant to the posts on your blog or if it is meant to be for your eyes only. Leaving your email address visible or having a contact form gives your readers that option.

Sounding Out Problems

I do have a habit of privately sounding out to my blogger pals when something is wrong with their blog (perhaps it is down, or codes are not working, etc) and I do this via email. More often than not, I receive a grateful reply from them and this works for the beneficially both ways. Read on »

Don’t Neglect These Readers Of Yours

Race against hurdlesI am still on vacation and accessing the net using a 56kbps dial-up modem. However, downloading speed is far lesser than 56kbps and hence, this post is typed separately using WordPad. Using a dial-up modem after enjoying the blazing speed of the broadband modem has brought me back to reality that no everyone on this planet have fast internet access. It took me a while to load up my websites just to check whether they are working properly. This then brings me to wonder whether my websites are “friendly” enough to those who access the net at a slower speed. Is your website or blog friendly?

Images
The use of images arguably slows down the loading of a website. Minimise the use of images or if you need to, use thumbnails instead. This would give your reader the choice of whether to see the image in a bigger format. Alternatively, you could reduce the size of your image using your favourite image editor. If you happen to have taken some pictures whilst on vacation, consider hosting them in another site like Flickr and pointing your visitors there for those who are interested in viewing them.
