15 Things I Learn About Google Adsense
Google Adsense was the first advertising vehicle I used when I started out blogging. Many people claimed that it is easy - all you need to do is just to copy a code and paste it on your blog and start earning money without doing anything. That, my friends, is probably the biggest lie on the blogosphere. It is far from easy.
Google Adsense used to appear on this blog but I have since removed them for reasons which I shall disclose later in this article. Having used Google Adsense for a little over 2 years, I have learnt a bit about how it works and I would like to share them with you here. The word “Ads” hereinbelow refers to Google Adsense ads.
1. You will fare better if your site is found on the front page of search engines.
2. People who are more likely to click on the ads are those who came through search engines. Regular readers are more likely to be ad-blind.
3. Analyse your search engine referral traffic to see whether people are searching for something in particular. That gives you an idea of whether they are more likely to click on the ads on your site.
4. If your site contains information like an encyclopedia, chances are people are less likely to click on the ads. If your site contains little information, chances are they will click on the ads to get what they really want.
5. Ads do not fare as well in blogs about blogging compared to other kind of blogs / sites. You are better off selling 125×125 ad space. This is because those who are interested in reading blogs about blogging come to know the blogs in this genre through blogrolls, linklove, networking or even social media. They are less likely to come through search engines.
6. Traffic does not equate with ads clicks. The type of traffic matters. Search engine traffic is better performing compared to social media traffic.
7. Social media traffic drags down the click through rate (CTR) of the ads and if you have other sites running ads, this might drag down the overall earnings in your account. That’s why I do not recommend placing ads in blogs about blogging or blogs which attract a lot of social media attention.
8. Ads placed in posts / content fare better than those on sidebars.
9. Use your discretion with your ads size and placement. Don’t irritate your readers by stuffing your site with ads which make it difficult for the reader to navigate or make your site look spammy.
10. If your goal is to make money from ads, limit or don’t use other forms of advertising which may distract your reader. For instance, if you have affiliate links together with the ads, you run the risk of the reader choosing to navigate to the affiliate links. If no sale is concluded, you will not get any commission from the affiliate programme and you will worsen your CTR for the ads.
11. Not everyone earn money from the ads like Darren Rowse. Earnings from the ads can be very depressing especially if you do not know what kind of ads pay well and how you get the right kind of traffic to your site to convert their visit with a click. There is no magic formula to making thousands of dollars through the ads. Get that into your head!
12. Based on the sites that I have, the payment rate for ads on a descending order are roughly as follows - Travel Sites → Electrical / Electronic Gadgets Sites → Financial / Legal Sites → Fishkeeping Sites → Food Sites.
13. The more focused the topics on your site is, the more relevant the kind of ads shown. This increases the chances that the ads would be clicked. Diary-like sites are less likely to fare well with ads.
14. Keywords chosen carefully on a post (and on the site overall) will help to draw the relevant ads and help with search engine placing.
15. Those who gives tips on making money through ads rarely or seldom have the ads on their site. This is because they are making money through the ads being placed on other sites which they own (and which they might not be telling).

I am banned from them, giving no chance for me to experiment them for earnings optimization purposes which I think a lot of newbies will have interest in.
Affiliate marketing and direct ad sales is taking over the Internet by storm as webmasters and bloggers are becoming more and more capable in multitasking. The pay is also handsome compared to PPC ads.
Anyway, PPC still a great way to earn for some.
I have not started monetizing my blog. I find your tips very practical and useful to plan further.
That’s enlightening, though earning online is not as easy as it seems.
Wayne : I would rank affiliate marketing as something which is a different kettle of fish altogether. For affiliate marketing, credibility and persuasion are likely to assist in the sales but not really so for Google Ads. As much as I see plenty of sales pitching on how easy it is to make money through affiliate marketing, I still have my doubts. Perhaps there are some who succeed but the majority are likely to not.
By the way, thanks for the social votes
Oldsailor : I think your site has pretty good potential considering that it is quite technical in nature. You should give it a try.
philin : Yes, earning online is not as easy as what some people tout it to be.

No problem, I am building my social media profile right now and I would say this post of yours helped a lot of people as well. Good job.
Hi pablopabla,
Thanks for sharing valuable insights on Google Adsense. Enjoyed reading your blog. Stumbled upon it on PetalingStreet.org
But you did not reveal why you removed Google Adsense from your blog.
Hi, we have common friends but I have never post any comment in yours.
Anyway, I have been wondering for a while now, since I move to the new domain, I have no idea how to monitor traffic (if I have any to monitor) or to see the search engine referrals. How do I do that? I do have a feedburner account, but so far it has 0 on the “numbers of visit” which is kinda odd for me too ….
Any help would be really great …
My blog is more about fashion/shopping and I’m a newbie blogger, so this was the first time I even heard about AdSense and the possibility to “earn money”.I was also under the impression it’s as easy as “copy pasting the code” and people will visit and click. Voila you made $$!
Yea right. Lol, my site is slowly gaining visitors but Adsense rejected me and said I could try later when my blog was more visited. So it’s not that easy either getting visitors. I’m trying to put as much content as possible on my page.
