How To Sell Your Blog With A Good “About” Page

Introduction55One of the biggest mistakes I have seen bloggers commit is not paying attention to their “About” page. It usually leaves me dumbfounded when a blog which supposedly teaches others about blogging or making money contains little or no information on the author or the purpose of the site. The immediate result of that is my lack of trust in the site and chances are, I will not return to read the same blog. I sincerely hope you are not committing this grave error.

I Want To Know What Your Site Offers

This is not new as many other bloggers have mentioned it before. Having a well described “About” page gives the new reader further details on what the blog is all about. You might have a tagline near your blog title / header but that may not suffice. Tell me what’s in it for me to make repeated visits to your blog.

I Want To Know Your Credentials

If you are blogging to teach or give tips and such, it is essential that you let me know what kind of credentials you have to teach or give me such tips. Nobody becomes a teacher overnight without a period of learning. I will be very suspicious on your credibility when you blog out of nowhere and claim to know the secrets of this and that (especially on money making online). It is natural to be impressed by someone with credentials - especially if the credentials are relevant to the area they are writing in.

Who Are You Writing For?

Who is your target audience? You might want to let your readers know so that they don’t looking around your blog trying to make sense out of it. Though I won’t rate this factor (target audience) as high as the other two above, it does help to seize the attention of those who fall squarely in your target audience.

Who Are You?

Well-known and popular sites usually have information on who the author of the blog is. It may be as transparent as the publishing of a photograph of the author or it may be just a pseudonym. Either way, it gives a form of identity to the blog. Even other forms of websites have some About Us page to let readers know who is behind the blog. A blog without identity looks suspicious to me and I wouldn’t feel like leaving a comment in a post to a nobody.

Say What? You Didn’t Even Touched It?

Themes downloaded for free usually have a default “About” page. And usually this default “About” page would contain a small paragraph saying something like “This is the About page. Write and introduce yourself bla bla bla“. Please, for blogging’s sake, edit that page before you announce your blog to the whole wide world. To leave this default page unedited is like wearing your newly bought jeans with price tag et all still intact and for all to see (no offense to those who do that as a fashion statement). I would consider this error a faux pas, if it exists in blogging.

Go through your “About” page and see what you have written there. If possible, incorporate the above pointers. Having a properly written “About” page can help to sell your blog to new readers. Did you pay any attention to it or is it still fresh as the default “About” page? ;)

Ah I must fully agree with this tip. I detest reading sites that have bare About pages because that is a sign of a shoddy blogger. Be that as it may, I don’t have any credentials to back up my blog la… how ah… ;)

I would be glad if you can have some opinions on my About page since I did not allow comments there and no one actually writes in to ask about me.

An About page with “This is a sample Wordpress page” will make me laugh and definitely, I won’t go back, especially if it is a blogging blog or a make money online blog.

ParisB : For your beauty or shopping blogs, you can always show the amount of stuffs you’ve bought :D LOL!

Wayne : I am flattered that you request for my humble opinion on your About page. Hmm…what I can notice is that the About page, or at least the part about what your blog is all about, does not seem to jive in with your tagline which is “Fooling Around the Blogosphere Starts Here”. I think you can also improve with the 1st 2 paragraphs in the About page which consists of 4 sentences altogether. Break them into more sentences for easier reading :D

I actually spent a lot of time writing my ‘about’ pages in both my blogs *proud* :)

Whenever I visit a new blog, I always visit their ‘About’ page if I like their posts.

Hehe, Pablo, you know I like this one :-D.

I definitely agree with this tip. A very helpful one. I understand that the About page must be really big factor of your blog. It would be considered as promoting your blog in a very professional and nice way.. :) Thanks for this very nice article. :)

Adino : I do visit other bloggers’ “About” page too especially when I am new and I want to know who is this person behind the blog and why I should return.

Skellie : Yes, I learnt much from you on this one :D

Daphne : It is as applicable to your company’s web site. I see that your company’s web site has a good writeup on the company.
