What Makes Me Stumble and Digg Your Post

Deep thoughtsOr why is it that nobody stumbles your blog posts or articles? Or why is it that you don’t get a Digg? In this article, I will share with you what makes me stumble or digg a post when I visit a blog. By the time you complete reading this article, you will have an idea of what goes on the mind of a StumbleUpon stumbler or Digg digger.

What? You have a Blog?
Have you promoted your blog enough to get your blog noticed? Do I know your blog? Are you a reader here? Do you leave comments? If I don’t know of the existence of your blog, there is no way you will get a chance to impress me enough to give you a stumble or digg.

Is Your Blog Visually Impressive?
Let’s be frank. Men [can I say, women as well? ;) ] are turned on by visually attractive stuffs. It is no different with blogs. If you have a nicely designed blog, more so if it is custom-designed and not one of those common blog themes which you upload and use, the likelihood of me staying on longer to check out the contents of your blog is higher. And if I stay longer on your blog, the chances of me seeing something worth stumbling or digging would be higher.

Can I Find Your Blog Contents?
A stumbler or digger votes on the contents of a blog. Not on advertisements or social widgets. If you cramp and pack your site and pay way too much attention to advertisements and widgets compared to the contents, chances are I would be too frustrated to look around for something worthy of reading. I read the contents of a blog. Not come around looking for advertisements or fancy social widgets. I don’t really care about who was there in your blog and frankly, my eyes are now trained to ignore those widgets and advertisements when I go blog surfing.

Do I Have To Scroll Down?
This links to the above point. If I am directed to your blog for the 1st time and all I see is a header and advertisements, I will get turned off. Having a visually arresting blog also includes having a blog post headline which captures the attention and imagination. If your blog post’s headline is above the fold (which means I don’t have to scroll down), I may check out what is it that you are writing.

What’s Interesting?
When I visit a blog for the first time, the current post would usually be the first to grab my attention as I move my focus to the contents. In my opinion, posts which interest me and deserves a thumbs up from me are those which looks like much time is spent writing them (hardwork deserves a thumbs up), informative and of value to be shared with others, creative in writing (it may be the same subject but if written in an unorthodox way, it’s good) and timeless. I may be entertained by your latest post on your child’s 2nd birthday but I would do a disservice to fellow social media users to vote on your post as it would mean nothing to most, if not all of them.

…………….Enough. I’m off.
How long does it take for your blog to load? If it takes a little over 10 seconds to load in full, I am probably reading another blog already. Check your blog often to make sure that it loads quickly and that the elements are working.

Where’s the button?
On 50%-50% scenarios, I would stumble or digg a post if there is a widget or button which allows me to stumble or digg. An example of this would be the ShareThis button at the end of this post. If I can’t find the button, I might still go through the more troublesome way of manual submission if I find your post really really interesting or I will just leave.

Do I Feel Involved?
This is more personal in nature. I usually only stumble or digg posts which interest me or of which I am involved – eg. on blogging, parenting tips, useful cooking sites etc. If you are blogging about a subject which is alien to me, chances are I would not find it interesting enough to vote for a post of yours. There is nothing wrong with your blog. It’s just that our interests differ.

I especially like your #6. I cannot stand those sites that takes forever to load. Sienz only waiting for the ads to load and the flash to work. lol

    This deserves a stumble!

What a good piece of advice and i would say not to forget about pictures. sometimes pictures say the thousand words. Human eyes love pictures naturally. You are always smart enough to put a relevant picture next to your post. :)

Nicely written for those who wanted to have the social media effect so much.

The power of getting onto social media pages is to make your posts as bombastic and as catchy as possible. Awesome pics, attractive headings are all keys to it.

One thing that I have noticed on Digg is that keywords like Microsoft, Apple, Google and other tech-related keywords are very bound to massive diggs.

helen : That is one of the biggest turnoffs for me, actually. And I found out that some of the advertisments that I place in my other blogs are such culprits. I immediately removed them pronto.

    lilian : Thanks sifu :D

yukitee : Seriously though, sometimes I do wonder whether the photos I place are relevant enough. LOL! But yes, photos do make an impact but they won’t necessarily make me stumble a post per se.

Wayne : I guess you must be having a lot of success, eh? :D Between Digg and SU, I find SU being friendlier to give a boost to sites. You need quite a lot of votes on Digg before you get noticed.

Hi~ first time come to your blog~ it is good guildline for bloggers.
Anyway, I think nobody is interested to SU my post, haha~ But I am fine to blog for my own…

  7. pablopabla |

Sean : On the contrary, I found something interesting in your blog and stumbled it ;) It’s the visit to the old folks home. I think you did something really meaningful :D

Thanks for the hard work, I really appreciated it.
I am still very new for SU and dunno how to use it… :(

I’m another one for being put off by mass advertising - a few ads are fine (I run ads on my site) but when its clear the site is ‘made for adsense’ its a real put off.

  10. pablopabla |

Sean : My pleasure. Time to put SU into practice :D

Pete : LOL! This very site you are reading used to be made for adsense. Guess I made sense of its nonsense after coming to my senses :D

How much does button position matter? For instance, would you be more likely to SU or Digg if the buttons were mixed in with the post itself? Mine are at the bottom, but I’ve seen other bloggers put it at the top or within the post itself.

Tip Diva : Personally, it doesn’t really matter for me the position of the social media button. I usually only vote after reading the whole post and deciding that it is worth a vote. So, I don’t vote midway through reading or just on account of the header. With a SU toolbar on my browser to do the job, it does not matter whether the button is on the post or not. That said, having the button on the post makes things easier.
