Simple Tips To Please Your Readers
A blog requires a blogger and readers to tango. Many bloggers dig through countless articles on how to improve the readership numbers but fail to realise that there are some simple tips to win your current readers over. One step which is often neglected is the conversion of a regular reader into a loyal reader - one who will stick through with you no matter whether your blog is going places or going through a slump. These simple and obvious tips are based on effective business marketing tactics, psychological methods and common sense.
Be courteous
If you want your readers to do something (eg. to Stumble your article, to participate in a writing project, etc), don’t forget what your mum used to teach you - Say Please. And do say Thank You when your reader/s respond.
Reward
Reward and flatter your readers. Make sure it is genuine or people will smell it. It can be in the form of an acknowledgement especially for those who leave a valuable comment in your blog posting. You might also want to consider promoting their sites where appropriate. If your blog is resourceful enough, you might also want to consider compiling your contents into an E-book to distribute it to your readers.
Personalise
Readers like being given the personal treatment. Write as if you are writing for them alone. If they leave a comment, reply. Better still, reach out to them through emails or chat. People like being appreciated and be acknowledged that they have been noticed. If your blog has an auto-email response to each and every new commentator, you might want to consider customising it so that it sounds more personal rather than be shown as an auto-responder with no hint of effort being taken to reach out to these new commentators.
Get Them Involved
Get your readers involved in the blog. Create relevant polls or writing projects. Ask them what they like or dislike about your site. Make them part of the blog’s community. When a reader feels a good belonging to a blog, you bet the loyalty will be there. Of course, remember to thank them after they have participated and tell them that you appreciate their response and could not wait to get them involved again.
Reader Friendly
A reader-friendly site is one which has the reader in mind. Put yourself in the shoes of your reader. What do you like about your site and what don’t you like about it? Too many obstrusive adverts? Theme’s colour or font scheme unfriendly to reading eyes? Cannot find the RSS subscription button? Useless widgets? Too many images or scripts which slow down the downloading time of your site? Too many non-content distractions? Be critical of your own site for your reader’s benefit. This blog used to have an adsense-minded theme which had google ads screaming all over. After changing it to a theme with less adverts, I received positive feedback from my readers. Some were too polite to say they dislike the ads. You have got to be your blog’s biggest critic.

I especially agree with you on the last point. There are so many times I’ve been to sites that take forever to load. There’s simply too many third party flashes and advertisements I just cannot bother to wait. lol
helen : I think as people start to enjoy reading multiple blogs, they would rather a blog load up fast than not. So, if you want people to continue reading your blog, having a faster loading time would appease your readers.
