Staying Alive In The Google Game
“I love soccer far too much than to bother whether any advertiser wants to sponsor me. If I kick like a guy with two left feet, so be it. Anyway, my Blogsreview was demoted from 4 to 1. I started with nothing and I don’t mind ending with nothing as long as there is much in between.“
Thus said me in a comment I placed at Helen’s post intituled “How to beat Google at its own game?“. All blogs start with a Google PR of N/A. Then, it can be anything between 0 to 10 when Google conducts their periodical assessment of the websites out there (blogs included). This blog started off with a bang. Within 3 months, it garnered a PR4 and it stayed that way until last month. During the recent exercise, it dropped a notch and over the weekend, finally rested at 1. (Update : It’s now at 0 on 15.11.2007) Do I really care? No. And I will tell you why and how I am going to stay alive in this Google game.
This Blog Belongs To Me
I paid for this blog’s domain and hosting. I am the author of this blog. I decide what goes in and what goes out of this blog (that’s a hint to spammers out there). I have complete control over the things I can control over this blog. Where I have complete control, I am responsible over it. Google does not own this blog and it has no authority over me.
Accolades and Brickbats Are Beyond My Control
Whilst it may be possible to manipulate rankings or statistics through certain means, it is impossible to be 100% successful in doing so. Were it so, you will find such a blogger hogging the number one spot in all the charts, Google PR included. Again, you may be able to manipulate the rankings and statistics but readers being human, they would be able to detect whether you are genuine, attractive or as good as what your ranking shows. I am still puzzled with how Google evaluates this as well as my other sites. Not that I care anyway because as far as I am concerned, my blogs are good enough in my own eyes. If you are not confident in yourself, you should ask yourself why you are feeling that way. Afterall, God makes everyone unique in His own eyes. And every blogger is unique in his or her own ways and should be confidently proud in that sense (without being snobbish or cocky about it, of course).
How Much Money Are You Investing?
I have not spent a single cent into blogging todate. I started out with blogging from a free platform, earned some money through paid reviews, used that money to buy this domain and hosting and a little advertisement and rolled that around. I have made a little more than I expected and have enjoyed the fruits of my labour. Will investing lots of money into blogging eg. advertising, make you a better blogger or save you from what Google perceive your worth to be? The answer is no. You won’t get any certainty in that department.
Blogging Lifespan
Yes, I have been blogging for about 2 years now. Will I be blogging for the next 2 or 20 years? Maybe the former but highly unlikely for the latter. Technological advancements are moving so fast that what is cool and relevant today may be obsolete in a year’s time. Further, as I advance in my career and family life, other priorities will take shape. It is more likely that blogging will take a back seat. At the end of the day, when I call it quits and bid adieu to blogging or any of my blogs one by one, the blog will be deleted from the blogosphere.
This blog started with nothing but a clean template with a standard “Hello World!” post. It will eventually end with a “Goodbye World!” post. The rankings will fluctuate in between for all I care. What matters most is that I enjoy blogging to the fullest between the “Hello!” and “Goodbye” just like how I live my life between my first cry and my last gasp. That is the key to staying alive in the Google Game.

*clap clap* well said! At the end of the day, its what we are blogging for that matters. And if its money then yes PR matters. But if its for ourselves then no, PR is quite irrelevant.
Like ParisB, I applaud you.
Well said.
But, if you’re speaking from a enthusiastic blogger (which I don’t doubt) everything you said is true. But, if speaking from a monetized blogger out to make money, Google’s relevance cannot be simply waived.
For people who are into blogging solely to make money, they’ll have to adhere to the Google rule. My post was written from a money making perspective.
It is very apparent if a blogger blogs solely for money and not in his best interest. In your case, every post has “isi”, so you are right, Google ranking should never ever bother you.
*starts singing*
“Ah…ah…ah…ah…stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…”
That’s the spirit! I reaped a lot jor, so dun care wan. I just create more babies only mah.
ParisB : It matters more that friends like you come back, read and comment on this blog
Thanks!
helen : It may affect and demoralise those who are newly into money making through blogs. They will realise that it is not at all easy to make money through blogging alone.
GiddyTiger : Yup, I will survive
lilian : You inspire many. Keep it up as many look up to you for your blogging stamina.
Earning Money is more important than PR..forget about PR from now on.. common we can live without it!
Yeah, I don’t put much value in PR either. As long as it doesn’t affect search rankings I don’t see the point.
that’s a good one pablo. we’re not working for Google, remember?
Mr. Rajawang : It still sends shivers down those who rely heavily on their PR to sell their blog (be it advertising or paid posts). Again, some advertisers who are not familiar with bloggers’ sites judge these sites on PR alone. It shouldn’t however, affect those who blog with no or not much emphasis on making money out of it.
Steven : I agree with you. I would be more concerned with a drop in my visitors than PR.
weirdoux : We are earning their money though…from adsense
like you, i have also not spent a single cent on blogging and at the same time, have only made a couple of hundred bucks from advertisements. i think the recent PR saga is very healthy as it brings us all bloggers back to a place to reflect upon the true meaning of blogging.
it’s very sad to see blogging turning into a business. i always believe… when money is involved, the true beauty intended will be affected.
zewt : I think in all things that we do, periodical reviews on why we are doing those very things are important less we get strayed away
