The Things I Did To Increase Readership

The other day, I was sharing with a fellow lawyer about my blogging hobby and how I have managed to sustain the blogs I have as well as finding the readers for them. I did not realise that there are so many things you could do, which will no doubt, add up to the readership experience. At first, I wanted to use the word “Traffic” but I think “Readership” is a more polite word since I am referring to people, some of whom I have become friends with. Anyway, these are some of the things I did to increase readership.

Website

I looked out for beautiful wordpress themes and chosed one which I felt most appropriate. I learn from other sites and I tweaked my site by making small differences so as to make my website unique. I finally settled on a minimalist theme as it is the current trend and having read about numerous comments on how advertisements and useless widgets tend to irritate readers. I wanted to give my readers a pleasant reading environment.

I enabled plugins such as to display my popular posts so that new readers can see what other readers have deemed good enough to read. This feature also increased the number of page views on this site. I made sure that my site is accessible even through mobile feeds just in case there is someone out there who likes reading blogs on mobile phones. I also ensured that my RSS subscription button is visible above the fold.

Content

I try to begin a post with a catchy title. A title which stands out has a better chance of getting someone to read the post than a less attractive title. I try to make the content as personal as possible and make it king in the eyes of my readers and one of the ways to do so is to find inspiration for posts from reader’s comments. I also try to write as consistently as possible so that readers know what to expect or have a sense of expectancy when they come a visit.

Creating Community

I will go out to create communities and relationships with other bloggers by commenting in their blogs where appropriate. I also make it a point to reply to comments made in this blog so that my readers know that I value their comments and are interested in communicating with them on a more personal level. Sometimes, I will email my readers or even chat with them using gmail chat.

Publicity

I participated in Problogger’s writing project and had some good referrals from there. I also ensured that my blog has the necessary buttons so that readers who found my posts worthy could highlight them to others eg. through StumbleUpon. In fact, I found out that StumbleUpon brings more referrals than Problogger! Whilst I did previous discussed the pros and cons of guest blogging, I am now trying out guest blogging at other sites. In fact, my very first guest post just appeared at WPThemesPlugin.Com and I have already detected some incoming referrals. I also joined forums and ensured that my comments include a signature which has my blog url. I have also advertised through StumbleUpon to give my blog more publicity.

Do you do the above? Or what other things have you done which I have not mentioned above?

Is your lawyer friend a blogger himself? :-)

Nope, I can’t say I’ve done so many things. But it’s a good thing to learn from you. :-)

    Have a good weekend!

Helen : No, he’s not a blogger. I think I freaked him out when he realised that it can take so much effort to get noticed! LOL!

I was a little turned off to read the post noticing all the links in there (sooo much I ever seen in a short post!)

Anyway, content and first impression is all it take to get more subscribers, at least in my book.

WarriorBlog : This post is a summary somewhat of the things which I have done. The links go back to expanded posts which I have previously posted in case any of my readers may be interested. Thanks for your feedback :D

I would say content creation and networking/community building are probably the two most important for me, although all are necessary.

Steven : Content creation and networking / community building itself is a lot of work, don’t you think so? ;)

What a great encouragement. But nowadays, bloggers are blogging for profit. Not about passion anymore.

My blog (www.noktahhitam.com) aims to gun down hidden agenda, or at least close to it. I’m not looking forward to get more traffic, it’s just a digital journal. Life is short, I cant be a geek all the time ;)

Edwin : I wouldn’t say that all bloggers are blogging for profit. It’s just that those who are blogging for profit shout about it and gets lots of attention :D I would hazard a guess that there are more bloggers out there who are blogging for the sheer passion of it.
