StumbleUpon Brings More Traffic Than Problogger

What a weekend it has been. I wrote a post to contribute to Darren’s 31 Days to Building A Better Blog Project which was highlighted in his recent More Great Reader Blog Tips article. When I submitted the post to Darren, I was honestly hoping that Darren would notice it and find it worthy to post it up on his site which would translate to some in-coming traffic. Being such a nice guy as he is, he gave me the link love. And I got the traffic from his site. Thanks to all who came by!

But hey? Why the title of this post? You see, when I checked my stats this morning, I realised that there is another group of people coming by and a majority of them (approximately 80%) are referrals from StumbleUpon. These readers came because 2 of my posts were Stumbled - 7 Sites with Great Blogging Tips (which was also the post I submitted to Darren) and How to have a USD1340 Valued Blog in less than 5 Months.

My personal observation tells me the following:-

1. You can get a sudden deluge of in-coming traffic through StumbleUpon if your post has been stumbled by a StumbleUpon user;

2. To add to no. 1 above, my previous experience of being stumbled upon tells me that the visitors usually number more than 100.

3. After 1 or 2 days, the in-coming traffic dies off unless the said post which brought in the original stumblers get further reviews or new posts of yours are stumbled by these stumblers.

4. Most of the time, these stumblers do not visit pages other than the stumbled page. This is in contrast with referrals from other blogging sites which have a higher probability of further exploring of your sites. One example would be the referred traffic from Darren’s Problogger.Net blog which I see some of the readers surfing through other pages in this site.

5. StumbleUpon may bring instant traffic but the length of stay or loyalty to the site is more likely to be lower than a referral from another blogging site. The former gives you the rush in traffic and publicity but the latter serves as a better recommendation and more likely to be agreed to by the latter’s readers.

And no. 6? I am still trying to find out who stumbled the 2 pages to this site so that I can thank them personally! I think it is the least I could do to thank them for sharing this site with others.

My conclusion? I think a blogger definitely needs both - traffic from sites like StumbleUpon and Digg (for massive publicity and hopefully, enough to retain some readers) and referral traffic from sites be it Problogger.Net or any other blogs. You can never have enough of traffic. Otherwise, why are you blogging?

Oh, by the way, whilst the above title may sound like I am slacking off or belittling Darren of Problogger, I have no intention of doing so. Haven’t you also heard that using a controversial title will also bring in traffic? :D

That title definitely caught my attention at PetalingStreet.org :)

I think one of the reasons why you get lower traffic from ProBlogger was because your link competes with other links. I’m certain you’ll get more if yours is the only link in the post.

*looks around* Err… I… sometimes I submit my own pages if I think that it’s interesting for international audiences. Is that bad?

gaman : Yes, your observation is right. My post was highlighted with many other sites. Hence, the title of the post would be the determinant in whether someone wants to read mine or others.

Adino : I wouldn’t want to do that pal. Other stumblers might “boycott” your stumbles in future :P

You didn’t hear this from me, but I heard that some people register another username and stumble their own posts so as to not be found out. Proceed with care and caution if you do that. But I would rather do it the honest way, and besides I think social networking takes a lot of time and effort for the results.

cooliojones : Good advise cooliojones. Nothing beats being noticed for for doing a good job.

I too noticed that you don’t receive much return traffic from Stumbleupon, but Stumbleupon, Yahoo and Google are my largest sources of traffic.

StumbleUpon can be a great boost to a new blog. Unlike the other social networking services you don’t have to get popular to see results. One or two reviews and you could find yourself with a hundred new visitors.

    It’s great!

Rose : Do you mean Yahoo and Google being the search engine’s referrals?

skellie : Yes, it is gives a good thrill to know that your blog is being flashed so many times around the world. Thing is, I am still trying to find out who stumbled my pages here…

I like your point; do you think it is possible though that the stumbleupon submitters came from ProBlogger though?

It could have snowballed from that link perhaps? (I’m not sure, but I do remember reading the post following Darren’s link. Well done. :D )

As so many people have spoken highly of Stumbleupon I signed up and too I was wondering about the ethics of stumbling your own blog.

Michael : Hmm…what you said made me cAfter my second post was highlighted by Darren in Problogger, that second post was also stumbled. Was the stumbler Darren himself???

Jon : Glad to know that you have joined the community. Well, I think the community abhors stumbling one’s blog repetitiously. It would be like spamming, in my opinion. I don’t think they would mind one or two stumbles but more than that might result in the stumbler losing his credibility.

If it was, you should be very honoured then. ;)

    Michael : I would be!

I’m going to sound really silly in this… but what’s stumbling and what’s digging?

  15. pablopabla |

the reviewer : This is Stumbleupon and this is Digg. Both are sites which members vote or share their favourite sites :D

Getting traffic from StumbleUpon is definitely easier than anything I’ve come across with.

Carlo : In a way, perhaps but not all the time.
