Why I ditch MyBlogLog for BlogCatalog

If you notice the widget at the right hand side bar, I have replaced the MyBlogLog widget with a BlogCatalog widget. Both widgets are to do with Web Communities. You sign up and register your blog. Place the widget on your blog and hope that someone from the community will notice your blog, come over to your blog and make your blog a livelier place (or so you wish).

Why did I ditch MyBlogLog for BlogCatalog? The answer is simple. I get more referrals from BlogCatalog to this site compared to MyBlogLog. So, if you have more referrals (i.e. traffic) coming from BlogCatalog compared to MyBlogLog, it makes sense to practice favouritism towards members of BlogCatalog instead. I can’t help it. But there is more to that than just plain favouritism.

I prefer the more professional and better designed panel in BlogCatalog. You are able to browse blogs using a good selection of directories (when you register, you will be asked to indicate the category of your blog) which will enable you to go directly to your topic of interest rather than being limited to the Top 50 Communities in MyBlogLog. Browsing based on interest in MyBlogLog is much harder compared to BlogCatalog. Moreover, top communities in MyBlogLog depends on the number of members and generally, the number of members automatically increases based on traffic. Please allow me to illustrate if you are new to MyBlogLog.

When you sign up as a member of MyBlogLog, the system enables a tracking feature wherein once you have visited another member’s site at least 10 times, you become a member of that other member’s site automatically (unless you manually delete the membership). Therefore, popular blogs like ProBlogger - who just put up a video on how to differentiate your blog, ShoeMoney - who incidentally was looking for any lawyers or people who have good knowledge of internet legal issues, Mashable - with a feature on 5 money making opportunities in Facebook and TopRankBlog - which is currently conducting a reader poll on tools for networking online, will invariably have more members visiting their sites than say, a less popular blog. By reason of this, the popular blogs are more likely to remain in the top 50 MyBlogLog communities and continue to get more traffic as new members click on their sites.

On the other hand, BlogCatalog requires the user to manually join a neighbourhood of a blog which should, theoretically mean that the user actually wants to be part of the neighbourhood and be an active participant. Notice the use of the word theoretically? Well, it’s in theory because I have noticed that some members are actually members of more than 2000 neighbourhoods! Assuming you surf 20 sites a day, you need 100 days to complete the cycle! So, I can only presume that these members join neighbourhoods to get the owners of the neighbourhoods to visit their site.

Whilst BlogCatalog might not provide details on your visitors and what they click on your site unlike MyBlogLog, I don’t really have any use for that kind of feature as I use Google Analytics and Statscounter for the job. I would have to further qualify the earlier statement by saying that MyBlogLog’s traffic details are only limited to the 1st 10 visits of the day. Any more than that would require an upgrade. Payable, of course.

With the above in mind, I have decided that BlogCatalog should move into this blog instead. I would be keen to see it’s performance for the next 3 to 6 months.

Just curious. Wouldn’t it be even more ideal to have the MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog together? I’m seeing more Malaysians having MyBlogLog after all.

i think both are basically serve the same purpose. if one gives you better links and more traffic, then you’ve made the right decision.

hinching : Ermm….I don’t want to have too many stuff on my sidebar. I think one should be sufficient. In fact, I am now thinking of further trimming the sidebar on useless stuffs. LOL!

    Rose : Thanks! LOL!

Cheng Guan : Well, yes, I get more traffic from BlogCatalog. So, it makes sense :)
